HEIDI JO MARKEL- Founder

After graduating from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in economics-political science, Heidi Jo Markel moved to Los Angeles in the mid-90’s and was exposed to the world of filmmaking. After a few uncelebrated indie acting roles, she leapt at the opportunity to get behind the camera, discovering her true passion: production.

In 1999, intrigued by director Bernard Rose’s idea of shooting a modern day adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's novella "The Death of Ivan Ilyich,” Markel acted in and co-produced IVANS-XTC, which played at every major film festivals around the world and received four Independent Spirit Award nominations.

After cutting her teeth on Tolstoy, Markel produced BLIND HORIZON premiering at SXSW in 2003. A year later, Markel was attracted to a project based on the profound literary work by Bernard Malamud. THE TENANTS, a dark brooding drama starring Snoop Dogg and Dylan McDermott, premiered at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival.

After years of flying solo, Markel launched ECLECTIC PICTURES with the mantra "to be diverse in slate while combining the commercial and artistic aspects of filmmaking.” Striking an output deal with Millennium Films, ECLECTIC produced several films released by Sony, including the high-voltage actioner THE DEATH AND LIFE OF BOBBY Z, starring Paul Walker and Lawrence Fishburne. Directed by John Herzfeld and based on the Don Winslow novel, the movie gave Markel experience in the larger-budget action arena while filming in Mexico/Dana Point. In 2006, Markel produced George Gallo’s outrageous comedy MY MOM’S NEW BOYFRIEND.

In 2008, Markel moved to New York City to work on two more exciting projects; the psychological suspense-thriller AS GOOD AS DEAD, starring Andie MacDowell and Cary Elwes, and the irreverent dramedy SOLITARY MAN, starring Michael Douglas and directed by Brian Koppleman and David Levien. SOLITARY MAN received strong critical acclaim, premiering at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival, followed by box office success.

Blown away by the power of Andy Bellin’s script TRUST about an Internet predator wreaking havoc on an ordinary family, Markel joined forces with David Schwimmer (board member, LA Rape Crisis Center) to produce his sophomore directorial project in Michigan. Starring Clive Owen, Catherine Keener and Viola Davis, with a tour de force breakout performance by newcomer Liana Liberato (Best Actress, Chicago Film Festival), TRUST also premiered at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival to great acclaim as well as support by academicians, government agencies, private charities and parental advocacy groups.

Most recently, ECLECTIC brought two more star-studded projects into production with Millennium Film’s deal. Releasing by Film District, the romantic comedy PLAYING THE FIELD, starring Gerard Butler and directed by Gabriele Muccino, tells the compelling story about an ex-Manchester United player-turned kids soccer coach who finds himself unable to resist when in scoring position with gorgeous suburban soccer moms, played by Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Judy Greer and Jessica Biel.

Finally, a four-year struggle for Markel’s Eclectic Pictures came to fruition with LOVELACE: From the birth of the sexual revolution to the height of the feminist movement, the film depicts the life of Linda Boreman who as ‘Linda Lovelace’ became the first erotic superstar. Starring Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard and a star-studded supporting cast, LOVELACE is directed by Academy Award nominees Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. LOVELACE reunites Markel with one of her favorite writer’s, Andy Bellin, creating a brilliant collaboration of filmmakers and perhaps the pinnacle of Markel’s producing career thus far…with the best surely yet to come.
